Yuval shares: “On October 7th, my older brother, Yegev Buchshtab, was kidnapped from his home in Kibbutz Nirim, along with his wife, Rimon Buchshtab Kirsht. Since the war began, my focus has been on the campaign to bring the hostages home, and it was important for me to contribute to this cause with my own skills. Initially, I focused on fundraising while continuing to create artworks that reflected the struggle and pain, which were later showcased in numerous exhibitions.
My main project, “Fields of Nirim”, is dedicated to my older brother, whose name means “field” in Hebrew. In this project I illustrate the fields of Nirim using satellite images from Google Maps. I gather imagery from my childhood landscape and transform them into lines that I burn onto paper and cypress wood (sourced from Kibbutz Nirim).
The burning process is done using a technique I developed that involves working with an unfocused laser unit to control the character of its line. The aerial view allows viewing the landscape and processing what transpired in a more gentle, protected and distant way, generating a sense of both closeness and longing.” Yuval has held multiple sales events, raising over 100,000 Shekels for the Hostages Forum, his family’s campaign, and Kibbutz Nirim’s community. All proceeds from the sales were donated to the Hostages Families Forum.
